Now that you've got your tree home, the decorating fun begins! Follow the steps below and your tree will keep filling the room with that fresh pine scent for 4–5 weeks.
Cut Trees (Radiata Pine & Douglas Fir)
- Hose it down. We do our best to check every tree for spiders before it leaves us, but we recommend giving it a low-pressure hose down outside before bringing it indoors — this also helps keep the needles moist.
- Cut 2.5cm off the bottom of the trunk. This removes the dried resin that forms at the base and lets your tree properly absorb water.
- Secure your tree firmly in the base of your stand, tightening all bolts.
- Position your tree in a shaded part of the room.
- Keep it away from direct heat, air conditioning or sunlight — these will dry your tree out quickly. Direct sunlight can turn a tree brown within one to two weeks.
- Water daily. A tree can absorb up to 3 litres of water a day! The base of the trunk should always stay submerged — top up the water regularly. If your stand ever runs dry, re-cut the base of the trunk so it can absorb water again.
- Mist every few days. Fill a spray bottle with water and lightly mist the needles every 2–3 days (skip this if you're using electric lights — battery-powered lights are best for a fresh tree).
